    What are drone surveys?
  • Drone surveys are a faster, safer and more cost-efficient way to survey at height. Sometimes referred to as aerial surveys, UAS (Unmanned Aerial System) surveys, or UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) surveys, drone surveys are an increasingly popular method of surveying form the air.
  •
  • For roof inspections, bridge or large building surveys, drones are fast becoming the sensible choice for engineers, construction and asset managers because they offer great advantages in safety and speed of access.
  •
Why use a drone to survey?

  • In addition to building inspections, drone surveys are now established as a valuable approach to transmission tower and powerline surveying. By eliminating manual 'at-height' working, they greatly reduce risk and improve safety outcomes.
  •
  • Drones can be deployed rapidly and allow asset managers to interrogate defects using ultra high-definition 4k imaging. Our drones frequently provide fresh data on previously difficult to see areas; helping our customers to make quicker, assured decisions..
  •
  • Our drones can capture high definition video footage which provide a view from above without the cost of hiring a plane or helicopter. Drone surveys are also more affordable, quicker and pose fewer health and safety risks than setting up scaffolding and access platforms..

    LiDAR

  • LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) or laser scanning by drone creates exceptionally detailed digital models of landscape, vegetation, buildings and other assets. This makes it a great process for mapping and surveying landscape, quarries, stockpiles, roads and infrastructure, forestry, floods and complex structures such as powerlines.
  •
  • LiDAR is capable of seeing through vegetation and providing extremely precise images of what lies underneath, revealing objects in a point cloud. The sheer volume of data that can be captured by UAV-mounted LiDAR also helps create comprehensive data to support more effective decision making.
  •
  • If you need to map below the tree canopy or need to see below obstructions, or you are modelling objects that require greater accuracy (representation of sharp edges on a building for example), then LiDAR is worth considering as an alternative to photogrammetry.
  •
  • LiDAR can be carried out using ground-based equipment as well as drones. Contact us for more details.

  • GPS or Global Positioning System was developed and is maintained by the US Department of Defense. Since the introduction of GPS many other countries have developed similar satellite based navigation systems,
  •
    Surveying with GPS

  • Initially developed for military use, GPS is now part of everyday life. A few of the many things that GPS is used in include: mobile phones, in-car navigation and search and rescue equipment. But there is a wide variety of equipment and techniques that can be used for surveying.
  •
  • GPS was rapidly adapted for surveying, as it can give a position (Latitude, Longitude and Height) directly, without the need to measure angles and distances between intermediate points. Survey control could now be established almost anywhere and it was only necessary to have a clear view of the sky so the signal from the GPS satellites could be received clearly.
  • GPS is similar in some ways to the Trilateration and EDM previously discussed, except that the known positions are now the GPS satellites (and their orbits) 20,000 km in space. The equipment and calculations are extremely complex, but for the user the process is generally very simple.
  •
  • In the commonly available receivers, the GPS receiver almost instantly works out its position (Latitude, Longitude and Height) with an uncertainty of a few metres, from the data broadcast by the satellites. This data includes a description of the satellites changing position (its orbit) and the time the data was transmitted.

UAV Lidar Technology In Power Line Asset Management

  •
    UAV lidar technology

  • UAV lidar technology is widely accepted among power utility companies as an efficient tool for acquiring geo-referenced spatial data for various applications essential to power line asset management.
  • New route design can take the fundamental advantages of the lidar workflow which is all-digital format of its data collection, processing, analysis, delivery, and storage steps. By integrating high accuracy point cloud data and imageries with powerline GIS software workflow, it optimizes the route selection, tower construction site, cross section, data transfer, it realizes a seamless work flow from survey , designing, construction to transfer the asset to operation management. This maximizes the efficiency of the entire workflow, effectively avoiding duplication, saving investment. Furthermore, digital data acquired during an initial lidar survey can be archived and used to form the foundation of a permanently searchable and editable database, allowing subsequent time-based studies such as change detection.
  • As built powerline can use airborne LiDAR to modeling of existing routes and infrastructure, achieve a three-dimensional reconstruction of powerline corridor, recovery powerline corridor geospatial data, surface attachments (trees, buildings, etc.), the line sag, the position and the tower model, supplemented by powerline facilities and equipment parameters to achieve full digital line corridor asset management and visualization . It is often used in eengineering analysis/calculations for maintenance and upgrade, e.g. tower positions, sag analysis, thermal up-rate, load modeling, clearance and critical distances.
  •
New Route Planning and Line Construction

  • UAV LiDAR technology can provide users with a resolution better than 0.1 meters orthophotos, digital elevation model , cross section and contour. Surface features can be visualized, vertical and horizontal spatial information can be obtained in office computer from the chart, the designer in the office has all the feature which can viewed across computer for project design, including crops along the corridor private land boundary, houses etc..
  •
    Line Optimization and Line Construction

  • The site selection involves quite a lot factors, it is one of the most difficult process of transmission design. Airborne LiDAR system provides high-precision, high-resolution orthophoto (DOM), a digital elevation model (DEM) and laser point cloud data, LiDAR point cloud was loaded into professional software platform to optimize route selection and tower site selection. Through the unique spatial data processing engine, LiDAR data was compressed, stored, classified, indexed. It make the data can be fast read or searched. In the mean time, combined with two-dimensional map, a cross section view of a variety of three-dimensional map perspective, the real 3D corridor are compacted into designer’s office, which allows designers to "look around", "take into consideration of high or low stakes", consider the terrain, social factors , and ecological environment to optimize the design..
  •
    All Digital Information Exchange

  • Airborne lidar technology is a powerful tool to maximize the efficiency of power line design and asset management. It represents a clear advance over traditional surveying methods for power line applications because it provides several key advantages like unprecedented data collection efficiency, an all-digital workflow and excellent data quality and accuracy. It creates a digital platform among powerline designing institutes, constructions contractor and operation companies. It realized a seamless handover the digital data on demand among the three parties. Therefore, airborne lidar data is highly suitable for reliable engineering design and analysis of the physical parameters of power lines, and for the management of powerline construction and maintenance.
